The synopsis of "Kamome Diner" is...
Set in Helsinki, Finland, Sachie, played by Satomi Kobayashi, has opened a Japanese diner called "Kamome Diner," but days pass with few customers.
One day, Tommi, a young Japanophile, comes in as her first customer and asks her to teach him the lyrics to the "Gatchaman" theme song, but Sachie can't quite remember them...
On the same day, she happens to meet Midori, played by Hairi Katagiri, and their acquaintance begins when Sachie asks Midori about the Gatchaman lyrics she couldn't remember. Midori also ends up working at Kamome Diner.
As Sachie, Midori, and Tommi, who has become a regular, spend their leisurely days at Kamome Diner, people with various circumstances gradually gather, and the number of customers slowly increases...
...and so on.
In this movie, where the story revolves around the diner, food items like onigiri, cinnamon rolls, and coffee are crucial elements of the narrative.
Before pouring the hot water, Matti pokes his finger in the center to make an indentation and chants "Kopi Luwak." The coffee he brews is incredibly delicious, and Sachie is moved.
When Sachie brews coffee in the same way, chanting the spell, and has Midori drink it, Midori is surprised, asking, "Did you change the beans?" After that, the scene where other customers also enjoy the coffee is impressive.
Matti later causes a small problem for a certain reason... but that's for you to find out by watching...
Regardless of fiction, a lot of coffee is consumed in Finland.
In Finland, where an average of about 4 cups of coffee per person are consumed daily, coffee is an indispensable part of daily life for many people, starting the day with coffee in the morning and taking a break with coffee during work.
In "Kamome Diner," you can also see many scenes where customers are drinking coffee at the diner.
Now, let's go back to Matti's indentation.
The indentation made beforehand serves as a guide, making it easier to pour hot water into the center from the first pour, and by aiming for the same spot for subsequent pours, you can continue pouring hot water into the center.
In short, Matti's indentation is like a little trick for those who are not very experienced in coffee extraction to brew coffee stably.
If you've just started hand-dripping or have trouble pouring water accurately into the center, you might want to try making an indentation in the middle like Matti!
Its production method involves collecting undigested coffee beans from the droppings of civets that have eaten ripe coffee cherries.
Civets only eat perfectly ripe coffee cherries, and the digestive enzymes in their intestines add a unique flavor to the coffee, resulting in an exquisite taste.
Its unique production method attracts interest, and many coffee lovers want to try it at least once—that is Kopi Luwak.
Perhaps Matti's spell contains the wish for the coffee to become as delicious as Kopi Luwak.
"Kamome Diner" is a movie you can watch in a relaxed atmosphere without thinking too much.
If you want to relax by watching a movie, please give it a try. I'm sure after watching it, you'll also be poking your finger into coffee grounds and chanting "Kopi Luwak."

Hello, I'm Martin from Base Coffee staff! I love coffee and movies. Many people around the world drink coffee every day, and that's no different in the world of fiction. Coffee appears in many stories, sometimes as an important prop. This column series on "Coffee and Movies" was born from the idea of "let's pay attention to coffee in the world of fiction" to explore how it appears and what meanings are embedded in it! Please understand that sometimes coffee might not be that relevant, and my hobbies and personal opinions might be included. So, the first installment of the "Martin's Coffee and Movies" series is about the 2006 Japanese film "Kamome Diner"!Synopsis of "Kamome Diner"
"Kamome Diner," directed by Naoko Ogigami and released in 2006, is a human drama set in Finland, depicting the relaxed interactions of people.
The synopsis of "Kamome Diner" is...

Coffee in "Kamome Diner"
In "Kamome Diner," coffee serves as an item that connects Sachie and the people of Finland. There are two main ways coffee plays this role... The first is the connection with the young man, Tommi... Tommi visits the shop because of Gatchaman, and Sachie promises to provide him, her very first customer, with free coffee forever. From then on, Tommi continues to visit Kamome Diner every day for his free coffee, and he witnesses the development of new menus and people visiting with various troubles. The other is the connection with the man who suddenly appears, Matti... One day, Matti visits Kamome Diner, orders a cup of coffee, and tells Sachie, "It's not bad, but shall I teach you a better way to brew it?" and proceeds to teach her how to brew coffee.

About Matti's Delicious Coffee Brewing Method
In "Kamome Diner," Matti's coffee brewing method, where he pokes his finger in the center and chants "Kopi Luwak," is very memorable. Some of you might have wondered, "Why make an indentation in the center?" or "What is Kopi Luwak?" Here, I'd like to briefly explain those reasons. Why did Matti make an indentation?
In reality, whether you make an indentation or not, there's no difference in taste when brewed by someone experienced in coffee extraction. So why make an indentation? It's because it serves as a guide. When brewing coffee, it's important to pour the water in the center in a circular motion, about the size of a 500-yen coin, as if drawing the Japanese character "no" (の). By doing so, it becomes possible to extract components evenly from all the coffee grounds set in the dripper. In other words, by pouring in the center, you can prevent uneven extraction where a lot of components are extracted from one part while not much is extracted from other parts.
What is the spell "Kopi Luwak"?
"Kopi Luwak," the spell chanted when making an indentation to make coffee taste better, is actually the name of an existing coffee bean. "Kopi Luwak" is considered a rare and valuable coffee with limited distribution, often called a phantom coffee. "Kopi" means "coffee" in Indonesian, and "Luwak" is the name for the "Asian palm civet."
