All you need is hot water to start! The minimalist coffee lifestyle

I'd like to start brewing coffee at home, but I don't know what equipment I need... When I look into it, it seems like a lot of things are necessary, so I can't seem to get started. I think there are quite a few people who have this problem. For those of you who find it hard to take that first step, this time we'll introduce a minimal coffee life where all you need to do is boil water!

How to Brew Coffee Minimally

When starting a coffee life, what do you need if you minimize the items you use? One option is a coffee press. It's easy to use and excellent for experiencing the coffee beans' flavor directly, but... Many people who are new to drinking coffee dislike the fine grounds that tend to remain when using a coffee press. Additionally, cleaning the equipment and disposing of coffee grounds can be a bit troublesome, so it's not highly recommended for those who want to start brewing coffee casually. So, Base Coffee considered what other easy ways there are to start a coffee life besides a coffee press, and this is the answer they came up with!
Melitta dripper
Paper filters
Coffee beans (purchased in ground form)
That's it. You might think, "Is that all?" but if you have a mug at home and can boil water, you can brew coffee with just these! Now, let's look at how to brew coffee using these items.

Step 1: Boil Water

First, boil water in a kettle or electric pot. The ideal water temperature for coffee extraction is 90-95℃. After it boils, stop heating and let it sit for 20-30 seconds until it settles; that's the right temperature!

Step 2: Set the Dripper on the Mug

No coffee server? No problem! Set the dripper directly on your mug. This also reduces dishwashing, killing two birds with one stone. スターターセット1

Step 3: Set the Paper Filter and Grounds

Place the paper filter in the dripper. To ensure the paper filter adheres closely to the dripper, fold the seams alternately before setting it. スターターセット2 The proportions of coffee grounds and water are very important for coffee extraction. If you're brewing one cup of coffee, use 10g of coffee grounds; for two cups, use 20g. Ideally, it's best to measure precisely, but if you find measuring bothersome, the scoop that comes with the Melitta Aroma Filter 1x2 measures about 7g of coffee grounds when leveled. So, for one cup of coffee, use 1.5 scoops, and for two cups, use 3 scoops. スターターセット5

Step 4: Bloom

Don't forget to pour water evenly over the grounds until they are slightly damp, and let them bloom for 30 seconds! スターターセット3 The "bloom," which can be thought of as a warm-up for the coffee, is very important! Performing this step allows the coffee grounds to swell, ensuring that the components are thoroughly extracted!

Step 5: Pour Water

After blooming, it's time to pour the water! When brewing coffee, you might imagine pouring water in circles from the center, thinking a kettle with a narrow spout is necessary, but... With the Melitta dripper we're introducing today, such a kettle is not needed! Thanks to its calculated shape and function, if you pour the required amount all at once, it extracts at a consistent speed. The amazing thing about this dripper is that all you have to do is pour the water and wait. スターターセット4 You can pour water according to the recommended scale by Melitta, but pouring 180ml of water for 10g of coffee grounds will yield delicious coffee. By the way, when pouring 180ml, the water level should be a little above halfway up the dripper. If you're about to start brewing coffee, first try this simple brewing method to get a feel for it! Having coffee for your morning wake-up or a relaxing after-meal moment might just enrich your daily life!

For those who want to go further...

Coffee is a very profound beverage. If you also get equipment other than what was introduced this time, you might be able to brew even more delicious coffee or create flavors tailored to your preferences. For those who have tried coffee brewing and thought, "I want to delve deeper into coffee!", here are some other tools you might want to get.

For a fresher taste! Coffee Grinder

A coffee grinder is essential for enjoying fresher coffee! Coffee beans begin to oxidize after roasting. If they are ground, oxidation accelerates even further, and if not used quickly and left sitting, their precious deliciousness will be lost. To enjoy even more delicious coffee, it is recommended to buy coffee in whole bean form and grind it just before brewing. Therefore, having a coffee grinder at home allows you to enjoy more delicious coffee. コーヒーミル1 For a convenient coffee grinder that can also store grounds, click here →Hario Ceramic Coffee Mill Skerton

Your preferred coffee! Various drippers

While the Melitta dripper we introduced this time can maintain consistent quality no matter who brews it, it also has the drawback of being difficult to adjust to one's personal preference. Once you become accustomed to brewing coffee, try using a dripper where the extraction speed changes depending on the pouring speed of the hot water. You can adjust it to your liking, such as brewing quickly for a refreshing taste or slowly for a richer flavor! ドリッパー Please also refer to the column where we introduced famous drippers! →Melitta, Kalita, Hario: What's the difference? Stable extraction! Drip kettle

If you're using a dripper that allows for flavor adjustment, a kettle with a narrow spout is recommended. It makes it easier to control the speed and position of the water pour, resulting in more stable extraction. It can be said to be an essential item for a more refined coffee life! ハリオケトル5 For Base Coffee's recommended drip kettle, click here →Hario V60 Drip Kettle Buono Matte Black

Convenient to have! Drip Scale

A drip scale is surprisingly useful! In coffee extraction, where the quantity of coffee grounds and water is crucial, a scale that instantly shows how much water you've poured is extremely convenient!
