How to brew coffee using the Base Coffee method: French Press Edition

The brewing method varies depending on the coffee maker and also affects the taste of the coffee. Understand the correct way to use the equipment and its characteristics, and enjoy the coffee that suits you. Here, we will show you how to brew coffee using a "French Press," which anyone can easily use!

How to Use and Tips for the BASE COFFEE French Press

Unlike hand drip, where the taste can vary greatly depending on who brews it, one of the characteristics of the French Press (hereafter referred to as "press") is that anyone can brew a consistent cup of coffee. Let's review the correct way to use it and the key points to keep in mind. What to prepare
Press
Ground coffee (coffee beans ground slightly coarsely)
Hot water (90-96℃)
Timer
Step 1: Warm up the press Before putting the coffee grounds into the press, pre-warm the press by rinsing it with hot water once. This prevents the hot water added later from cooling down. Step 2: Add coffee grounds Measure the required amount of beans, ground slightly coarser than granulated sugar, and more like granules than powder, and add them. Step 3: Add hot water Add the appropriate amount of hot water to the grounds added earlier. The key here is to pour the hot water along the side of the vessel! At BESE COFFEE, we use 250ml of hot water for 14.5g of coffee and 350ml for 19.5g. Step 4: Let it sit for 3 minutes After adding the hot water, set the timer for 3 minutes and let it sit with the lid on. Do not lower the filter part, called the plunger, yet! Step 5: Add a final touch and lower the plunger When the timer rings, remove the lid, quickly stir up and down 3 times with a spoon, and remove any foam or scum floating on top. This helps to spread the flavor throughout and remove any harshness. Replace the lid and slowly lower the plunger. ▼Stir 3 times ▼Remove the surface foam Step 6: Pour into a cup and it's done! Pour the coffee from the press into a cup and it's complete! If you pre-warm the cup before pouring, it will taste even better.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the French Press

Each coffee maker has its own characteristics, with both advantages and disadvantages. The main advantages of the press are:
Easy to brew
Consistent results
The authentic taste of the beans
These three. As mentioned in "How to Use and Tips," the great thing about the press is that anyone can use it because you just add grounds and hot water, let it sit for a while, and then lower the plunger. Also, the fact that you can brew a consistent cup of coffee by following the proportions and steps is a major point. Furthermore, because the press uses a metal filter, it can extract even the coffee oils, allowing you to directly experience the authentic taste of the coffee beans. On the other hand, the main disadvantages are:
Troublesome post-processing and cleaning
Fine grounds remain
These two. After drinking coffee, grounds remain in the press. Compared to paper filters, which allow for easy disposal of grounds, the press can feel a bit more cumbersome to clean up. Additionally, you need to disassemble and wash the plunger part to ensure no grounds or oils remain. Secondly, because fine grounds that cannot be removed by the metal filter tend to remain in the cup, the texture can be slightly powdery and gritty, which some people may not like.

The evolution of the French Press? 'American Press'

BASE COFFEE also carries a device called the "American Press," which looks very similar to the French Press. While the handling and cleaning methods are almost the same as the French Press, the American Press has a pod for the coffee grounds, which prevents unnecessary agitation of the grounds. It also has a double-layered filter that allows for the extraction of coffee while retaining the oils and leaving fewer fine grounds than a French Press, thanks to various technological improvements. We'll introduce the detailed handling and procedures in "How to Brew Coffee: American Press Edition," so stay tuned! The French Press is easy to use and allows you to enjoy the authentic taste of the beans. It is perfect for everyone, from those just starting their coffee journey to those with a deep passion for coffee. We will continue to introduce various coffee makers in "How to Brew Coffee," so please look forward to it!
